With even more prize money on offer than ever before, we are extremely lucky to have the support of ALL our sponsors, and in particular, series sponsor Baileys Horse Feeds who have continued to support us for yet another year and another Breeders’ Championship Show.

The 2018 show promises to be even bigger & better with the addition of new sponsors – British Dressage, British Showjumping & British Eventing – who recognise they have a pivotal role to play in supporting the ‘reimagined’ British Breeding Futurity.

As a result we are delighted that, for the first time this year, the Futurity Championship has been expanded to include the Futurity Eventing Championship, as well as the Show Jumping and Dressage Discipline Championships.

And there’s more… Both Futurity graduate mares AND dams of Futurity graduate offspring are eligible for the Supreme Futurity Mare Award, which will go to the highest placed Futurity Mare at the GBMS Grand Final.

With classes for both horses & pony mares, foals & youngstock, there’s a championship for everyone, not to mention the valuable feedback you’ll receive from our expert judge Hans Heinrich Breuning.

Now in it’s 3rd year, the Great British Mare Show has opened it’s doors this year to ALL mares, both horses & ponies, and reduced the minimum age from 4 to 3 years.

We’ve even opened up the show to youngstock not eligible for the Futurity or Foal Championships in response to member requests – so get those youngsters entered…

So if you’re thinking of entering please do so ASAP so we can finalise the show catalogue and class timings as entries close in just 4 days!

STOP PRESS! GREAT BRITISH MARE SHOW SCHEDULE CHANGES

Please note that all Saturday GBMS & SPSS Part 1 classes will now run on Sunday 09 September combined with their equivalent Day 2 class, before the GFMS Grand Final with their Part 2 equivalent class and run on Sunday 9th September, before the GBMS Grand Final.

This is partly because most owners prefer to enter on the Sunday and not the Saturday as they hope to qualify for the Grand Final on the same day, and partly because owners with foals entered for the Saturday Elite Foal Championship don’t want to tire the foals out running beside the mares before the foal championships.

Any Saturday entries already received with be transferred to the equivalent Sunday class unless you advise that you wish to withdraw and be refunded before entries close on 1st September.

We’ve also been asked if we could run extra youngstock classes along similar lines to last year for owners with foals and youngstock up to 3 years that have not qualified for any of the championships.

We will try to accommodate this request provided there are sufficient entries to make these extra classes viable. We really need to know how many of you are interested in these extra classes and what youngstock you want to bring ASAP.

Because it will take time for us to update the schedule and online entry system can we ask you to email us ASAP if you want more youngstock classes at info@britishbreeders.org. This will enable to make a decision about viability sooner rather than later.

For all other GBMS / SPSS and Futurity Championship classes please get your entries in now… Spectator entrance is free for the GBMS and Futurity Championships.

If you have any questions about entering your animals, which classes you can enter, or stabling arrangements at Moreton Morrell, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be delighted to help.

‘NEW FUTURE FOR FUTURITY’ – BEF PRESS RELEASE 11th APRIL 2018

The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) is pleased to announce the continuation of its Equine Development programme, following its handover to a new company formed by a partnership of industry experts. The group came together in a bid to take on the running of the activities, which consist of a stallion show, breeding magazine and the young stock evaluations known as the Futurity and Equine Bridge. The new organisation will take on the name British Breeding.

The company will be co-directed by Jane Skepper of Horse IT; Rachael Holdsworth of Holdsworth PR; Sacha Shaw of Breeding British; Joris van den Oetelaar who is a director of the Anglo European Studbook; and Dr Eva-Maria Broomer of Horsepower Creative.

The CEOs of the three Olympic Disciplines, British Dressage, British Eventing and British Showjumping – and Sandy Senior representing the British Breeders Network, will each have a non-executive director seat on its board, in order to promote closer cooperation between British breeders and the sport and to ensure inclusivity and a wide reach of the programmes. The company will have an independent non-executive chair, Jan Rogers, director of Research and Policy at The Horse Trust and the former head of Equine Develolpment at the BEF.

In adopting the holistic approach of joining up the breeding world with the sport, the company has a strong business plan to secure the future of all elements of the programmes for the continued benefit of breeders and horse sport alike.

Says Iain Graham, chief executive of British Showjumping: “We are pleased to be involved in the continued development of young British-bred sport horses through the activities of the new group. The importance of strong links between breeders and the sport cannot be underestimated, and with the diversity of people participating in showjumping, there is a need to produce good quality horses that have the potential to compete at all levels”.

Chief Executive of British Dressage, Jason Brautigam added: “These programmes are invaluable in continuing to develop and nurture equine talent. Strategically it is a vital component for the future of equestrian sport and British Dressage is fully committed to supporting this process. The Futurity evaluation and veterinary assessment identifies horses that may go on to compete successfully at all levels by cultivating soundness and longevity, not only for the welfare of the horse but also for the benefit of our sport as a whole”.

“This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to increase the chances of the many talented British-bred horses going to British riders who will maximise their potential”, adds David Holmes, chief executive of British Eventing. “British-bred horses and their breeders need the recognition they deserve, and we need to work to stem the tide of buyers going abroad”.

Nick Fellows, chief executive of the BEF concludes: “Our equine development programme has been fundamental to the future of British breeding and it has been our main aim, over these last few months, to find a safe set of hands to take it forward. The new organisation has exciting plans that will ensure the continuation of the integrity and standards the BEF created”.

“These are exciting times and we are all eager to move forward with our plans”, says Rachael Holdsworth. “The hard work starts now, but we are already well advanced with plans for the Futurity evaluations and a new marketing strategy. We look forward to working with breeders and providing the infrastructure to allow their horses to gain the recognition and reputation they so richly deserve”.

An announcement on Futurity dates will be made soon, along with entry details. Anyone wishing to register their interest this year should email futurity@holdsworthpr.co.uk

Information for editors

The partnership has already successfully delivered the Competition Stallions Event at Addington Equestrian Centre on 18 February, which showcased 62 stallions, including five Olympic horses. Over 1000 people attended, supported by international riders like Gemma Tattersall, and John and Michael Whitaker who showed their stallions.

British Breeder magazine will continue to deliver news from British studbooks and has exciting content planned to include features, interviews, scientific studies and veterinary articles. The vision of the magazine is to develop a wider appeal to foster stronger links between breeding and the sport.

The popular Futurity series will be revitalised, with dates in July and August, a new judging panel and veterinary assessment services, offering valuable opportunities to breeders. The scoring assessment has been developed in line with the very latest developments in phenotyping research and in consultation with international specialists to create a world-leading evaluation system. There are also plans to develop the Equine Bridge to provide opportunities to match horses with riders.

Jane Skepper is a fifth-generation horse breeder whose family have bred thoroughbreds, arabs and sport horses. She has competed in both BE and BS and runs Heritage Stud in Suffolk. Jane also runs Horse IT Ltd, and launched the Competition Stallions Guide in 2012.

Rachael Holdsworth has worked in PR and marketing in the equestrian industry for many years, launching her own agency, Holdsworth PR, in 2001. She has ridden and owned horses from a young age and understands the needs of breeders through her work with the BEF Futurity over the past eight years.

Sacha Shaw breeds sport and show horses under the Volatis prefix and owns the WBS-UK graded stallion, Volatis Defiant, as part of the Defiant Syndicate. She has been a Futurity evaluator and has spent time working on a large breeding and show jumping station in Germany. She has written breeding articles for many publications and runs the Breeding British website and blog and works for the National Pony Society. Sacha is a qualified accountant and was previously the Equestrian Manager for Horse of the Year Show.

Joris van den Oetelaar comes from a family of breeders and equestrian enthusiasts and owns a successful stud in the Netherlands, from where he runs one of the country’s largest events centres. He is a director of the Anglo European Stud Book with a particular specialism in IT and database development.

Dr Eva-Maria Broomer is a small breeder of dressage horses, a passion she combines with academic teaching and research. Her interest in breeding and equestrianism has led her to found Horsepower Creative, specialising in automotive and equine PR and photography, working with a wide range of breeders and breeding related companies.

Sandy Senior is a British Breeders Network Board Director and owner of Glossoms Farm Stud.

OBITUARY – STEWART HASTIE, 22ND SEPTEMBER 1922 – 21ST FEBRUARY 2018

Stewart Hastie died suddenly on 21st February 2018, aged 95 years. Stewart, a Scotsman, was a graduate of the University of Glasgow and worked as a veterinary surgeon for 74 years, focussing predominantly on horses throughout his career. After graduation in 1944, Stewart first worked in general practice in Kent, before moving to Buckingham to set up an equine and small animal practice. The practice, Hastie and Jenkerson, was where he was to meet his wife of 24 years, Jane Nixon, who came to work there in 1978 and who became a partner in 1983. Jane and Stewart founded Nixon Equine Veterinary Practice in 2005, which was to be rebranded and sold as Buckingham Equine Veterinary Practice in 2011.

In a tribute Buckingham Equine Vets said, ‘When he retired from hands-on veterinary work he left a legacy of pursuing the very best in clinical excellence, while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism. As a practice team we still strive to achieve these principles laid out by the father of our practice many decades ago.’ Stewart, however, did not really retire and remained very much involved with Nixon Equine Veterinary Consultancy, providing advice whenever asked for and when not! He had strong opinions and was never shy in coming forward, but he was also ready to listen to others and to learn.

Stewart was of the old school of veterinary surgeons with a background steeped in horses and a real passion for the horse. He was an observer, a questioner, a reader and a thinker. He was ahead of his time, recognising the importance of correct foot balance and appropriate shoeing, realising that saddle-fit for the horse was imperative for optimal function and embracing appropriately trained paraprofessionals as part of the team required to promote equine health and welfare. He recognised that learning never ended and his thirst for new knowledge continued unabated throughout his life. Stewart was a gentleman, with high professional ethics. Woe betide anyone who transgressed these principles when he was in practice. He had an amazing memory and, combined with his wit and sense of humour, had plenty of tales to tell from throughout his extensive career.

Stewart was intimately associated with many facets of the equine world, most particularly hunting, working hunter showing, eventing and racing. He supported eventing as a life time member of British Eventing. He was Veterinary Advisor to the Society of Master Saddlers and was recognised as an Honorary Fellow of the organisation. He delivered the inaugural lecture on the History of the Saddle to the Worshipful Company of Saddlers in 1983. Stewart was passionate about education of the horse-owning public and was intimately involved with the British Horse Society. He wrote two editions of The British Horse Society Veterinary Manual and received an Award of Merit for Welfare and Training from the British Horse Society. His contributions to the equine industry were recognised by the award of the British Equestrian Trade Association’s Life Time Achievement Award in 2013.

Stewart also played an active role in veterinary politics serving as Secretary to the British Veterinary Association in the 1960s and acting as both Honorary Secretary and Honorary Information Officer for the British Equine Veterinary Association in the 1970s. Stewart was a passionate believer in continued professional development and was an avid supporter of BEVA meetings until very recently.

Stewart provided unwavering support for his wife Jane and her work. Despite suffering a total right-sided stroke in 1999, Stewart’s indomitable perseverance and determination shone through. His gait was impaired, but Stewart still found ways to accompany Jane on the majority of her professional visits. They were a formidable team in the nicest possible way, forged from 40 years of working closely together.

As the British Horse Society have said, Stewart’s past and continuing contribution to the equestrian world was an inspiration for all of us involved with horses, enhanced by his sense of humour and captivating wit. I have been fortunate enough to know Stewart throughout my entire professional career. His powers of observation, thirst for knowledge, willingness to engage in debate and change his mind, and his overall passion for the horse and equine veterinary medicine have always shone through.

100 horses contested 15 classes at the Baileys Horse Feeds sponsored, Great British Mare Foal & Youngstock and Futurity Elite Championships, held at Moreton Morrell College in Warwickshire on Saturday 9th September.

Despite the early start and late finish, punctuated by two dramatic thunderstorms, our breeders were not deterred from travelling from as far afield as North Yorkshire, Devon and Cornwall, to present the best of British horse breeding in the main arena in front of German judge Katrin Burger.

Open to all British-bred mares, foals and youngstock up to 3 years, of all disciplines, breeds and types, there was a class and championship for everyone. With generous prize money on offer for both horses and ponies, all horses placed 1st and 2nd went forward to the final championship judging.

Top honours and an impressive haul of awards went to Lisa Maynard’s 3-year-old stallion, Balou For Pleasure. This young Futurity Elite stallion sired by the famous Balou de Rouet, won the Futurity Show Jumper Championship, the GBMFS Show Jumper Championship and SHOW SUPREME, to take home 3 Championship titles on the day. Champion also at our Richmond Qualifier in July, Balou For Pleasure has racked up 4 championships in under 6 weeks! A truly remarkable result.

Equally well-deserved, Lynne Crowden’s young stallion, Woodlander Wild Love, sired by Woodlander Wild Child, won both the 2-year-old Futurity Dressage class and the Futurity Dressage Championship.

Our grateful thanks go to our generous sponsors – without whose support none of this would have been possible: Baileys Horse Feeds (main series sponsor) + Elite Stallions + Woodlander Stud + Sulby Hall Stud + Kevin Sparrow Photography + 1LG Digital.

We are very privileged to announce as our Judge for the Baileys Horse Feeds sponsored British Breeders Network Championships for 2017, the extraordinarily experienced Judge, Rider and Trainer, Katrin Bürger.

Katrin Burger is a graduate in agricultural engineering, but was an early and passionate rider. She made an internship at Gestuet Birkhof, a jumping and dressage breeding station in the South of Germany and became later the Head of Gestuet Schlossacker also in the South and, in parallel with this busy career running a breeding and young horse training station, she was a consistently successful rider of young horses at the German Bundeschampionat. Her successful rides include many unforgettable names such as French Kiss, Sir Oldenburg. Sir Nymphenburg, Daktyllius, Sterntanzer and in more recent years Sir Solitaer, Santo Dottoro, Danzarino and many more besides. From three year old Materiale classes to Grand Prix, Katrin has trained, ridden and been decorated with success with these special animals.

Most formatively, she spent nearly ten years as the Vice Chairman of Breeding at the Oldenburg Verband with responsibilities in all aspects of breeding for Oldenburg worldwide. Her experience of Foal Championships, Stallion Licensing and young horse selection and judging is deep and wide. She has given one of the most interesting and compelling lectures at the FEI Young Horse Breeding Seminar with some clear ideas for the direction of the breeding, marketing and training of future international horses.

She has now returned to South Germany where, with her partner she rides and trains both people and horses and is actively involved in the training of pony riders.

We thank her for joining us at Moreton Morrell on 9th September 2017 for our Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity Championships for Dressage and Showjumping and the Qualification and Finals of the Great Brutish Mare & Foal Show Series.
